An upgrading and modification work has been carried out for a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at Siak Liang Enterprise Sdn. Bhd. in 2015. Prior to upgrading and modification, the WWTP was underutilised with only a grit chamber, wire mesh screen, and two medium-sized aeration chambers. Therefore, the WWTP was upgraded and modified to cater and provide proper treatment for the wastewater generated from chicken slaughtering process. The WWTP is designed with a basis of 9,000 birds slaughtered a day.
A batch type of treatment system is best suited for a chicken slaughter house as wastewater is only generated during specific time of the day. A Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) system is a system that uses one tank for all biological processes. The system is proven to achieve BOD5 removal efficiency of more than 95%. The treated wastewater is expected to achieve Standard B of the Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009 limit; with continuous good housekeeping practice and maintenance of the WWTP.
