Chemsain Forest Restoration Campaign 2023: Planting the Seeds of Change

As climate change and deforestation cast shadows, communities worldwide grasp the urgency of restoring our ecosystems. Amid these mounting environmental concerns, tree planting emerges as a critical antidote. The Chemsain Forest Restoration Campaign 2023 stands as a rallying point for the transformative power of tree planting. Co-organized with the Forest Department Sarawak, the campaign program organized by Chemsain showcased a remarkable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative which also aligns with and supports the federal government's ‘Greening Malaysia Program’ which targets to plant 100 million trees from 2021 to 2025.  From the 100 million trees, Sarawak will plant 35 million trees (in five years) under the ‘Greening Sarawak Campaign’.

The opening ceremony's distinguished guests included En. Mohammad Bin Siphon and Ir. Brian Chong, Directors from Chemsain and representing Sarawak Forestry Department were Tuan Haji Biha Bin Razali and Tuan Haji Anuar Bin Haji Da’an, Deputy Residents for Samarahan. Also present were Encik EH Fat A/L E Sau, Principal of SMK Padungan, and Madam Anawatye Binti Musili, Chairman of Sarawak Medical Services Union Kuching. This Chemsain Forest Restoration Campaign brought together diverse participants, and many members of the community to make a resounding statement about the role of trees in shaping a sustainable future.

The day of the campaign was carefully organized, starting with participants gathering at 6.15am. After a 2-hour journey to the Sabal Forest Reserve in Simunjan, the day commenced with breakfast and a briefing by the Forest Department Sarawak. The participants then took part in warm-up exercises and a photo session prior to initiating the tree planting activities. This effort led to the planting of 1,000 saplings, with the involvement of around 300 individuals, averaging about 3 to 4 trees per person. The saplings included precious native species such as meranti, selangan, nyatoh, and more.

Participants had a break for lunch, while reflecting on their collective efforts in rejuvenating the ecosystem and slightly after noon, they embarked on their journey back to Kuching, leaving behind a transformed landscape and a powerful message of hope for a greener, more sustainable future. With these activities, it is hoped that we can contribute to the Greening Sarawak Campaign.

The success of the Chemsain Forest Restoration Campaign 2023 emphasizes the importance of unity in addressing environmental challenges. In essence, this campaign serves as a beacon of change. In these pivotal environmental crossroads, the simple act of planting trees is sowing the seeds of transformation, nurturing a legacy of vibrant nature and flourishing generations.
